Scene
Breakdown
Quick Breakdown, minimal spoilers
At the play's opening, we meet King Richard the II and his court.
Two Dukes have come before the king to make claims against one another. Duke Henry Bolingbroke claims that Duke Thomas Mowbray murdered The Duke of Gloucester, Richard and Henry's uncle. In deciding their fates, Richard banishes Mowbray for life, and banishes Henry for 6 years.
During Henry's banishment, Henry's dad, John, dies.
Richard, instead of bringing Henry back and giving him his land that he inherited, takes all of it to fund a (maybe frivolous) war in Ireland.
While he's gone, Henry comes back to get his revenge. People rebel, political rivals are murdered, it is anyone's guess who is stabbing who in the back. Richard and Henry are left asking: what makes a king?
Divine Right? or a Bigger Army....
Now, for the spoilers.
